Hello,
This is Joshua here, guest blogging :)
The story of Josh and Ben:
Two good friends ,who are both interested in technology, programing, flash and blender, decided that we want to become damn rich. We both got influenced by the ideas of Robert Kiyosaki and Donald Trump. We both realized that life can be brutal and harsh if we do not plan ahead and decide our fate.
I still remember the last day before the release of A-level results. Ben asked me :"What would be more valuable? A straight A certificate? or the best programming skills in the world and a mindset of the rich?" (im dramatizing here, but im trying to throw a point) I chose the latter.
The point is, it doesn't matter if you are smart or not, rich or poor, right now. But it's what you are planning to do and the skill sets you want to acquire, that makes all the difference.

Random Forum Signature

If you frequent forums, you might have came across someone whose signature shows a random image everytime. Nevertheless, this is a very useful trick to use if you have many signatures you want to showcase, or just to simply impress your fellow forumers.

Sounds like a typical job for javascript? Unfortunately, most forums don't allow javascript. Neither is this done by manually changing the picture every second of the day.
It is done with a very very simple php script that makes the url of your signature point to a random image in your collection. =D (you will need a php supporting host though)

We've Gotten A New Host

After a whole week of host-downtime winter, we've finally reverted things back to normal.
The Story
Due to the non-profit nature of r-factor, all the flash files, tutorial sample files, php scripts, and layout are hosted on my friend's home server for free. However, as of last week, he could not host the files any longer for some reasons.
Hence, there was a need to find a replacement host... Fast.
Free hosting definitely won't cut it, as the ones that claim to support php are usually plagued with long downtimes, and the ones that have good uptime don't support php. And, almost all free hosts have stingy bandwidth restrictions. It was impossible to have the best of all worlds.
Anyway, I went for paid hosting in the end.
Kudos to hostsg.com, the files are back in no time. I chose it as it is located in my country, which means I can track them down easily in case things screw up. But after a few emails to and fro, I was assured that they are a trusty host that one could rely on. Imagine having your inquiry email replied in just 20 seconds, even before you became a customer. (And, its not one of those robot generated replies) That's freaking fast.
The only downside was that their price is a bit on the high side, 118SGD (about US$76) for a basic hosting plan. But considering their excellent service, it was really worth the bucks.

Blender 3d: Array Basics

Another very cool feature in Blender 3d is the array modifier. It can create really nice "abstract" animations and random stuff like the whirl of cubes below. You can also check out some other examples at Blender's array page.

The main reason for this tutorial is to help people who have difficulties going pass the point of simply creating rows of duplicates. There're some video tutorials out there that teaches how to do so, but videos tutorials often load sluggishly and sometimes hang before even getting to the point.
Blender 3d array rotation. Array modifier. 3d Blender Array Tutorial. This tutorial is on how to use arrays in Blender 3d. It show you how to rotate, offset, in arrays. Also, it is a Blender 3d double helix tutorial on how to make blender 3d dna be spinning the mesh using rotation and spirals.
In case if you are totally new to the array function, fret not. To use it, simply click on the object you want to use arrays on, then go to "Editing" (Press F9). Under "Modifiers", click on "Add Modifiers" and click on "Array".
The controls should be self-explanatory, but by simply playing around with the default controls, you may not get further than making several duplicates of the object in a straight row. When I first knew about arrays, I was stuck with making straight rows for almost a whole month
Here's the main point. To perform tricks such as rotation, spirals, etc, you must make use of the "Obj. Offset" function.
But firstly, we have to make a reference object for the "Obj. Offset" to work. In the 3d view, insert an Empty ("Press Space" -> "Add" -> "Empty").
Select the original object in 3d view it again. Under the "Obj. Offset" text field, type in "Empty". Next, deselect the "Relative Offset", as the Obj. Offset can cover its function.
You may want to bump up the Count so that the array effects are more apparent later.
Lastly, select the Empty in the 3d view. (It is denoted by the x-y arrows, not the colored ones) Try dragging it around, rotating it, resizing it, and watch the array morph into funky new patterns!
You can add another array modifier to make an array of an array. (a.k.a 2d array) For the 2nd array modifier, you need another Empty, and it should be called Empty.001 by default.
I guess thats all for arrays. The hardest part of arrays is probably to realize that the "Obj. Offset" function is the basis of all the cool tricks. Once this barrier is surpassed, it should just a matter of your own creativity and experimentation. =)

Flash: Control People With Subliminal Messages

Subliminal messages are everywhere. They lurk in movies, posters, TV ads, and affects you in ways that you might not even know. They are well-known around the internet, so you might have already heard about them even before reading this post. (Here are some examples) Some songs even have malicious subliminal messages portraying Satan, eg. Stairway to heaven. What's more, experiments have even shown that these messages can really control your mind! (somewhat like a virus controlling a computer)
So, why not use the power of the subconscious to control others? Imagine making people do your bidding without the slightest disagreement. Imagine using it to control the whole internet! Muahahaha!
In this tutorial, we will learn how to plant a subliminal message into flash animations, so that you can control your audience and make them into your slaves. ;)
... Just kidding.
Anyway, lets proceed. This is more of a joke tutorial than an actual one. =X
The Main Concept
Subliminal messages and effectiveness, Satanic Songs, Mind Control, How to make subliminal messages, lucid dreams, hypnotize, self hypnosis
Unlike static pictures which requires careful photo manipulation to plant those messages in, it is much simpler for an animation.
The trick is to make the animation play at a very high frame rate (eg. 30 frames per second), and place the subliminal message on a unsuspecting frame. The average human eye is known to see 25 frames per second. But actually, it records at a much higher frame rate, but much of the visual data is passed on to the subconscious. This method has been tired and proven in some lipton ice tea ads.
Do it in Four Simple Steps
1. With your flash animation open, right click anywhere on the stage, go to "Document Properties"
2. Set the frame rate to 120fps (the max)
3. Divide 120 with your frame rate. Then, drag all the keyframes in your timeline to be this many times apart, so that the animation still plays at normal speed.
4. Choose the keyframe where you want to put your sublimimal message in, then enter the text.
Tips for a better subliminal message:
Use Transitions to Disguise the Message, if Possible.
You don't want your audience to see it easily, or who knows there might be an angry mob flaming you to the depths of internet hell.
But luckily, the average human doesn't really focus on transitions. (eg. swipe, dissolve, fade, those powerpoint like stuff) This is a good way to get the message hidden better, while not sacrificing on its effectiveness.
Do Not Over-distort The Subliminal Message.
Distorting the image is good if you are worried that the viewer may spot it. But, there are limits to distorting the message. If the image is too distorted, the mind may not work out what it is, even if the power of the subconscious is used.
A gauge you can use is to make sure you can work out the message without thinking staring too hard at the frame it is on.
A Single Message Works Best.
The human brain remembers an idea best if it stands alone. I suppose you can actually put two or more if the animation is long enough. This is to give the mind some time to register each message.
